In addition to the respite care Smile provides on a daily basis, we also offer other activities and experiences for the children and young people we support, including a beach hut on Hayling Island, just a short trip from our new short-break centre.
The Solent facing hut comes fully furnished ready to be enjoyed and is easily accessible for people with disabilities, making it ideal for the young people we care for.
The beach hut was officially accepted by the charity by the Mayor of Havant, Cllr Gerald Shimbart, in front of a crowd of the charity’s staff members and the children we support.
The generous donation was made by Ted Gostling CBE, President Emeritus of the ACT Foundation, a grant making charity enhancing the quality of life for children in need. Ted acquired the beach hut in 2005 for his family and friends to enjoy trips to the beach. In recent years Ted and his family have been unable to use the hut as regularly and made the decision to kindly donate the facility to Smile for others to enjoy.
Ted said, “The support Smile Support & Care provide to disabled children and young adults is admirable and it is my pleasure to donate the beach hut we have on Hayling Island beach. The location is beautiful and makes a great day out by the sea. I hope the beach hut provides many happy memories for those supported by the charity.”
Stuart Baldwin, Chief Executive of Smile Support & Care said, “We are extremely grateful to Ted who has provided us with such a unique and special donation. The beach hut is in a lovely place and will be a very welcome destination for many of our young people to enjoy.”
A team from local ASDA superstores lent a hand to help uphold the appearance of the hut with a touch of paint and some weeding, as well as donating some crockery to keep inside. The volunteers plan to return soon to give the hut a blue and yellow themed makeover to compliment the Smile Support & Care charity colours.
The beach hut is now available for the children we support to use, together with their carers. Arrangements can be made via the Smile office, so please get in touch to find out more.
