Why leave a gift in your Will to Smile?
As a charity, Smile Support & Care relies on the support and generosity of members of the public – people like you – to ensure we can be there for future generations.
Our services are more in demand today than ever before, and as we move into the future that demand looks set to grow even further.
Across Hampshire and West Sussex, there could currently be as many as 40,000 children with special needs. As medical techniques develop, those with complex disabilities particularly will require more long-term support. It is essential that Smile is able to grow to meet this demand.
That’s why gifts in Wills are so vital to our work. By adding Smile to your Will, you will be making sure we are not only here for generations to come, but have the capacity to meet the needs of even more children.
Whatever the size of the gift you may be considering leaving to Smile, you can be assured that it will enhance the care and experience of the children and families we support in years to come.
Smile is planning ahead to ensure a brighter future for children with disabilities. We have launched our Legacy Appeal, to help sustain and develop our purpose-built short break centre for disabled children, young adults, and their families.
Our research has shown that it is often impossible for a disabled youngster to go on holiday or have a short break. Offering round the clock professional support, the centre will cater for those with varying needs, including the most severely disabled children.
This new state of the art facility provides comfortable accommodation in peaceful surroundings, where children and young adults with severe disabilities can stay.
The Smile Centre needs long-term support, and your gift to us will help provide a brighter future for the many children who will use and benefit from our centre in the future.
Why it is important to make a Will
It is important to have a valid Will to ensure that your money, property and possessions are distributed in the way you choose. One in five people in the UK die without a valid Will, potentially causing unnecessary complications for their loved ones at a difficult time. In these situations, the law decides what happens to an estate, and relatives may be left with an unwanted tax bill. Making a Will is the only way of ensuring your wishes are met after your death.
Gifts left to Smile in Wills – also known as legacies – don’t need to be large, and they don’t prevent you from taking care of your family and loved ones. In fact, a gift to Smile can ease the burden of inheritance tax. Whatever gift you choose to leave, will be free from inheritance tax meaning that 100% of the gift you give will benefit Smile. The value of your estate for tax assessment is reduced by the value of any gift left to charity, so the tax liable on your estate can be reduced or even eliminated.
Anyone can leave a gift in their Will to Smile. All gifts count and will be put to excellent use caring for local people. A gift in your Will is your way of showing that you care about the future of Smile and the services we provide to disabled children and their families.
How to leave a gift
We understand that family and loved ones come first. Once you have considered what you would like to leave them, you may decide to leave a gift to charity. It may also be a comfort to your next of kin to know that you are leaving a gift to a cause you really wish to support.
Making a Will is straightforward and relatively inexpensive to do. It is important that you use the services of a solicitor.
If you already have a Will, it is very simple to ask your solicitor to add a codicil to your Will, or this might be a good time to consider updating your Will.
If you do not have a Will, then your solicitor will be able to guide you on making a Will and how to include a gift to Smile.”
What type of gift to make
There are several options for you to consider when making your Will, if you want to leave a gift to Smile. These include:
- A share of your estate, after all other gifts and expenses have been taken care of. This is called a residuary gift.
- A specific amount of money, known as a pecuniary gift.
- Business shares, jewellery, a specific item or items, or a property.
Your solicitor or legal advisor will be able to guide you on the correct wording in order to leave a gift in your Will to Smile. Please do include our full name, Smile Support & Care, and our charity number: 1047359.
